The Soul of Relationships by Cyndi Dale

The Soul of Relationships: Just Who Are These People in Your Life?

When my first son was born, I was overtaken by an uncanny
sense of recognition. "Hello, little one," I whispered. "Nice to see
you again."

This greeting occurred over 17 years ago, at a time when ideas
like reincarnation, soul connections, and spiritual purpose were new to me.

Whether or not you are a student of soul, you've assuredly experienced the sense of degas-vu, that spark of acknowledgment, even the spice of precognition that accompanies relationships. Gaining clarity of the underlying and strongest bonds tying you to others is often the best way to accomplish the learning, peace, and attitude that can transform challenging associations into tactful connections and powerful interactions into even more dramatic ones.

Most of the time, our relationships click along and we don't have to dig deeply into their inner workings. When a relationship is really tough, important, or missing (such as when you're yearning for a mate, child, or friend), the most helpful way to take charge and make changes is to define the origin and nature of the relationship. There are basically seven types of relationships, all of which originate in one of four time periods. Analyzing a relationship according to type and origin is the most effective way to gain the glitter and gold possibly only through relationship.

The seven basic types of relationships are these: spirit, soul, cosmic, companion, twin, free, and body. There are three originating time periods for a relationship, which are the past, present, future, and all-time.

There are no "good" or "bad" relationships. Rather, each of the seven basic types of relationships serves different purposes. In general, spirit relationships support your spiritual mission, while soul relationships enhance the learning of your soul across time. Cosmic relationships force you onto a new path, whereas companion relationships provide the love needed to live a joyful life. Twin souls act as mirrors of positive, negative, or neutral qualities, while free relationships are what they sound like: They are canvasses to paint, as you will. Body relationships are purely physical in nature.

Some relationships fit in more than one category, but every relationship is a "check" on this list. Once you figure out the type(s) of relationship creating concern or opportunity, you can better classify its beginning in time and space, discern the primary purpose of the relationship, and then decide how to best embrace, eliminate, or alter the current relationship.

I've seen amazing changes occur in relationship when someone does the work to analyze for type and origin. Gary, as I'll call him, was suicidal. He had never been able to conquer his addictions, which included alcoholism and cocaine.
Neither had he maintained a major male-female relationship for more than a year, nor held a decent job for even that long. He had, however, been engaged in an unhealthy tug-of-war with his father for the majority of his life.

Gary and I spent several sessions deciphering his relationship with his father. I believed that this relationship held the codes for his life problems. After taking baby steps, Gary achieved an enormous breakthrough upon unearthing a past life relationship with his
this-life father. Apparently, Gary's father had been a guard in a concentration camp; Gary was a prisoner of war. As life would have it, they were also distantly related.

Gary had died embittered and angry, unforgiving of his father's role as persecutor. Gary's attitude had created an energetic bond called a "cord," a defining contract between two souls. In this lifetime, the two men had pursued the same type of relationship, which qualified as a twin and soul relationship.

The originating time period was the past. Once Gary released himself from the cord or connection, he was able to make the behavioral and attitude changes required to transform his current life, which transformed almost overnight. Within a few months, he had joined a Twelve Step Program and was confident of sobriety. He had also taken a full-time job and was undergoing relationship counseling. At last hearing, he was engaged to an incredible woman, helping to raise her two sons.

Not all situations are as heavy or charged as Gary's. The familiarity with my oldest son, for instance, has served us well. By the time Michael was two, I had determined some of the reasons for our mother-son bond. As the years have progressed, by understandings have also. Michael has been one of my most important teachers, and I hope only that I've become the same. In fact, he is instrumental in my learning one of life's most valuable lessons. If you want a relationship to be meaningful, you must search for its meaning.
